This page describes the terms under which Geochron accepts, stores, and makes available geochronologic and thermochronologic data and metadata. By contributing data to Geochron or by using data obtained from Geochron you agree to these terms. Questions about any of them can be sent to the contacts listed at the bottom of this page.

Geochron is a database system designed to capture complete data and metadata documenting geochronologic age estimation, so that the data can be reused, recalculated, and integrated with other data in the future. Geochron was developed as part of the EarthChem and EARTHTIME initiatives with funding from the US National Science Foundation (NSF), and is maintained at the University of Kansas.
Geochron is currently operated in a maintenance state. The database, search tools, REST API, and data upload paths remain available and are kept running, but no new features are under active development. See section 7 for what this means for long-term preservation.
Public data in Geochron are openly accessible. Anyone may search, browse, view, and download public data through the website and the Geochron REST API without registration and free of charge.
Contributors may designate a sample as private at the time of upload. Private data are visible only to the contributor's account and are not included in public search results, downloads, or API responses until the contributor makes them public. Geochron encourages contributors to make data public at the time the associated work is published.
Unless otherwise stated on an individual record, all public data in
Geochron are made available under the
Creative
Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).
You are free to copy, redistribute, transform, and build upon the data for any purpose, including commercial purposes, provided that you give appropriate credit to the data contributors and to Geochron (see section 5), provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made.
Where a record contains data first published elsewhere, the original publication should be cited alongside Geochron. The license applies to the data as held in Geochron and does not alter any rights in the original publication.
Descriptive metadata for public records (for example, sample names and
identifiers, locations, collectors, analytical method, laboratory, and
publication references) are dedicated to the public domain under the
Creative
Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. Metadata may be
harvested, indexed, and reused without restriction. Attribution is
appreciated but not required.
When you use data obtained from Geochron in a publication, presentation, derived dataset, or other product, please cite both the original source of the data (where one is recorded) and Geochron itself. A suggested form for citing Geochron is:
Geochron (year accessed). [Sample or aliquot identifier(s)], contributed by [contributor or laboratory]. Geochron database, https://www.geochron.org. Accessed [date].
Please also acknowledge the National Science Foundation as the funder of Geochron where acknowledgements are customary.
Data upload requires a free Geochron account. Data are contributed through the supported data reduction programs and manual upload forms described on the Submit Data page. By contributing data to Geochron you confirm that:
Contributors retain all rights they hold in their data. Contributors are responsible for the accuracy of the data and metadata they submit and may correct or update their own records at any time. Geochron does not routinely peer review or verify contributed data, although data reduction programs supported by Geochron apply the community reporting standards developed through the EarthChem workshops.
Geochron stores contributed data on servers maintained at the University of Kansas, with regular backups. Records are retained indefinitely and are not deleted except at the request of the contributor or where required to resolve a rights or accuracy issue (section 8).
Because Geochron is in a maintenance state, service is provided on a best-effort basis without a guaranteed level of availability. Should Geochron be unable to continue operating, reasonable efforts will be made to transfer public data and metadata to another suitable open repository and to notify contributors and the community in advance.
Contributors may edit or withdraw their own records. Anyone who believes that data in Geochron infringe their rights, contain errors, or contain personal information that should not be public may contact us using the addresses below. We will review the request and, where appropriate, correct, restrict, or remove the record.
Data and metadata are provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose. Neither Geochron, the University of Kansas, nor the National Science Foundation shall be liable for any loss or damage arising from the use of data obtained from Geochron. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the contributors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.

These terms may be updated from time to time. The effective date at the top of this page shows when they were last changed. Continued use of Geochron after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
